Justice Sophia A.B. Akuffo (Rtd)

Chairperson

Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo (Rtd.) is a former Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana. Prior to this she had served for over two decades as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ghana. 

She has extensive experience within the Ghanaian corporate world as well as within the country’s legal system. She established her private Law firm, Akuffo Legal Consultancy (now Apex Law Consult) and practiced as a Legal Consultant from 1992 to 1995 when she was elevated to the Ghana Supreme Court Bench.  

 Her Ladyship Justice Akuffo has held positions on various Boards, Commissions and Committees over the years, both in Ghana and in the African Union. She was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana in June 2017 and retired from the Judiciary of Ghana in December 2019, upon attaining the compulsory age for retirement from the Superior Court of Judicature. 

Her Ladyship served as the Chairperson of Ghana’s COVID-19 National Trust Fund.  

She was appointed Chairperson of the Governing Council of the University of Ghana in July 2021, the first woman to be so appointed. 

Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo

Vice Chancellor

Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, PhD, FGA, is the (first female) Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana. She is a Professor of Linguistics and an experienced university administrator, with over 21 years’ experience in the higher education sector.

Professor Amfo has built her experience in governance through attendance of formal management and leadership programs as well as on the job training. She brings a lot of innovation and resourcefulness to her leadership positions and is adept at change management. As Vice-Chancellor, she’s leading her university to uptake technology in all its operations, while keeping people as the focus. As part of the execution of her vision, she launched a seven-million-dollar digitalization program to enhance the experience of the University’s students, faculty and staff.

Professor Amfo previously served as the Pro Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for Academic and Student Affairs, the Dean of the School of Languages, and the Head of the Department of Linguistics, of the same university. Her masters and PhD degrees, both in linguistics, are from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and her Bachelors in French and Linguistics is from the University of Ghana.

She is a member of many prestigious societies and organizations such as the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Commonwealth Professionals Fellowship, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, German Academic Exchange Services, and the International Women’s Fellowship Leadership Program. She is a pioneer fellow of the African Humanities Program (AHP) of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). She currently serves as the inaugural President of the African Humanities Association, an offshoot of the AHP.

Her national and international board membership include the following: Consultation Board Member of the International Pragmatics Association; Assistant Secretary-General of the Fédération Internationale des Langues et Littératures Modernes; Administrative Board Member of the International Association of Universities; Steering Committee Member of the Tallories Network of Engaged Universities, Chairperson of the Interim Executive Committee of the African Pragmatics Association and Governing Council Member of the Sustainable Development Solution Network.

In 2021, Professor Amfo was awarded as the GUBA (Grow Unite Build Africa) Nana Yaa Asantewaa Woman of Enlightenment for her resilience and work in academia which has created knowledge, built confidence and broken-down barriers to opportunities. In July 2023, She was recognised by Glitz Africa as the Ghana Woman of the Year for Excellence in Education.

Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu

Government Nominee

Her Ladyship Justice Barbara Frances Ackah-Yensu was called to the Bar in 1981 and has worked for over forty years, both in Ghana and internationally, in banking and financial services, mining, project evaluation and management, and the Judiciary. 

 Some of the institutions she has worked with in Ghana are: Ghana Reinsurance Organization; National Investment Bank; Non Performing Asset Recovery Trust (NPART); Ghanaian Australian Goldfields Ltd; and Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. 

 In September 2000, she was appointed as a World Bank Consultant/Trust Administrator/Chief Executive Officer for the Non-Performing Assets Recovery Trust in Uganda. 

 Her Ladyship Justice Ackah-Yensu was appointed as a High Court Judge in 2003, a Justice of the Court of Appeal in 2012, and was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ghana in December 2022. 

 Her Ladyship Justice Ackah-Yensu is a Guest/Part-Time Senior Lecturer in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) at the Ghana School of Law. 

 She is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, U.K. 

 She has co-authored a book entitled “Alternative Dispute Resolution – A Ghanaian Perspective”. 

Nana Wereko Ampim-Opoku

Goverment Nominee

Nana Wereko-Ampim Opoku is a professional banker with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Economics and Master’s degree in Business Administration (Finance Option).   

In 1991, he began his banking career at Ghana Commercial Bank where he worked for six years. He later joined Ecobank Ghana Limited and over the 22 years that he worked there, he was the first branch manager and supervised branches in the Tema Region, Accra Region, and Western Region before being elevated to the position of Area Manager in which capacity he served for 12 years. He spearheaded the branch expansion of Ecobank as a Unit bank in 1997 and became the first supervising Area Manager appointed in the bank's history. He was a Senior Manager and Management Committee member of the Bank for more than 15 years. Nana retired voluntarily as Area Manager of Ecobank Ghana Limited of Zone 2 in Greater Accra Region.  

The President of the Republic of Ghana appointed him as a Board Member of the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) and is currently the Board Chairman of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET). He also serves on the Board of Trustees for Academic Prizes Fund of the University of Ghana, Legon. 

Nana does charity work with Special Olympics Ghana, an organization that organizes year-round sports for children living with intellectual disabilities. He also volunteers and organizes funding for an NGO, Foundation for African Children Education, which caters for the education of over 400 children from all over Ghana. 

Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah

Government Nominee

Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah is the Chief Executive Officer of the John A. Kufuor Foundation, appointed in 2014 by the founder, H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor, former President of the Republic of Ghana. He has had a distinguished career as an international civil servant and served in various capacities in the United Nations System.  

He co-founded the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), an independent public policy think-tank which he co-founded in 1998 and was its Associate Executive Director until 2005. He continues to serve on the Centre’s Board of Governors. 

Prof. Agyeman-Duah studied at the University of Cape Coast, Ohio University, and the University of Denver, where he earned his PhD degree. As a former university professor, he taught at universities in North Carolina, USA, and, between 1994 and 1996, and served as a Fulbright Professor at the then Legon Center for International Affairs, University of Ghana. 

 He has published over a dozen articles in academic journals, monographs; edited and authored four books, including his autobiography, My Ghanaian Odyssey, published in 2012. 

Amos Oppong Amankwah

Government Nominee

Engineer Amos Oppong Amankwah is a Mechanical Engineer and a member of the Ghana Institution of Engineering.  He graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana.  

Engineer Oppong Amankwah started his career with Nestle Ghana Limited as a junior engineer and then joined Unilever Ghana Limited as a Management Trainee and rose through the ranks to the position of National Sales Manager. He is currently the managing director of Smice International, an engineering services company operating in Ghana and Nigeria.  

He chairs and serves as a director on a number of corporate boards. 

He served two terms as a Member of the Advisory Board of the College of Basic and Applied Science of the University of Ghana, and has served on and chaired a number of other committees in the University. 

Ms. Doris Kisiwa Ansah

Alumni Representative

 Ms. Doris Kisiwa Ansah is an experienced Journalist and Communication Expert; and is a veteran broadcaster with over 40 years’ experience in Public Relations, Media and Marketing Consulting.  

 She is the Chief Executive Officer of Babywalk Company Limited and Babywalk Pre-School. She received a Presidential Award – the 2008 Grand Medal for her contribution to media practice in Ghana.  

 An alumna of the University of Ghana, and of Volta Hall, Ms. Ansah was elected the Chairperson of the University of Ghana Alumni Association in 2022 and serves as the alumni representative on the University of Ghana Governing Council. 

Major Daniel Sowa Ablorh-Quarcoo (Rtd)

Council Appointee

Major Daniel Sowa Ablorh-Quarcoo is a chartered management accountant. He served as Chairman of Ghana's Public Interest and Accountability Committee, as well as on the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana. In 2006, he was appointed as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). During his tenure, he assisted five other African Commissioners in establishing the African Tax Administration Forum. Prior to joining the IRS, he served ten years (1994-2004) as Director of Finance for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), building on six previous years’ experience as a management accountant with COCOBOD. Prior to this time, he served eleven years as a Paymaster with the Ghana Armed Forces.  

He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Ghana Business School. 

He chairs the University’s Finance and General Purposes Committee. 

Mrs. Yvette Adounvo Atekpe

Council Appointee

Mrs. Yvette Adounvo Atekpe has extensive professional experience in the field of ICT with significant executive leadership accomplishments in driving business growth for well over two decades. Yvette is the Chief Executive Officer of Dimension Data Ltd., a global systems integrator and managed service provider. She is recognized as an influential leader in the industry. 

She is accomplished in establishing world class client-centric teams and processes for successful multi-national ICT start-ups in Africa including Accelon, Africa Online, Celltel and IS Internet Solutions.  

She is currently the Board Chairperson of Petra Trust and, serves as director on the board of Access Bank Ghana and Internet Solutions Mozambique.  

Mrs. Yvette Adounvo Atekpe is passionate about the advancement of women and girls in ICT. 

Dr. George Agyekum Nana Donkor

Council Appointee

Dr. George Agyekum Donkor is the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), a regional international financial institution belonging to the fifteen ECOWAS Member States. Prior to this, he had served in various other capacities in EBID and in other corporate institutions. 

A lawyer and a development banker by training, Dr. Donkor’s career, which spans close to three decades, has been marked by implementing change to drive progress not only in the West Africa sub-region and also stimulating a wider international impact through regional integration and engagement.  

Dr. Donkor is recipient of many awards including the 2022 Prix de la Fondation award and Ghana Innovation Leadership Award 2019. He was recently named by Financial Afrik as one of 100 personalities who are transforming Africa.  

Ms. Tina Sackeyfio

Council Appointee

Ms. Tina Sackeyfio is a seasoned and dedicated Human Resources practitioner with over 22 years of working experience as a generalist in Human Resource Management. She is a Senior Human Resources Business Partner for Stanbic Bank Ghana, and is recognized for building productive relationships through effective stakeholder engagement, advisory support, coaching, recruitment, talent acquisition and performance management at all levels. She is an alumnus of the University of Ghana, holds an MBA in Human Resources from the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom, and is a Certified Professional in Transformative Coaching from the Coach Masters Academy. 

Prof. Nana Akua Anyidoho

Convocation Representative (Teaching)

Professor Nana Akua Anyidoho is Director of the Centre for Social Policy Studies at the University of Ghana.  She has extensive experience in research, teaching, community development and policy engagement.  

Prof. Anyidoho’s research is broadly in social policy and social development. She is interested in how young people and women, as marginalized social groups, interact with policy processes and structures in pursuit of their visions of development. Thus, her research frequently explores themes of participation, inclusion, agency, and empowerment. 

Professor Anyidoho has served in various capacities on bodies such as the Ghana Studies Association, the Executive Committee of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), and the Board of Directors, of the African Studies Association (ASA). 

She is one of the Convocation representatives on the University of Ghana Council.  

Mr. Michael Owusu Ansah

Convocation Representative (Non-Teaching)

Mr. Michael Owusu Ansah is a Chartered Tax Accountant with over 30 years’ experience in accountancy practice. 

He has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors and has, since 2006 worked with the University of Ghana. He is currently College Finance Officer in the University’s College of Education.  

He is President of the University of Ghana branch of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and is one of the Convocation representatives on the University of Ghana Governing Council.

Professor Abdulai Ahmed Jinapor

GTEC Representative

Professor Abdulai Ahmed Jinapor is the Acting Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the body with the regulatory and supervisory oversight of tertiary educational delivery in the Republic of Ghana. Prior to this position, he was the Deputy Director General of the same entity, GTEC. Before his appointment to GTEC, Prof. Jinapor served as an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Education, Winneba. While at Winneba, he held a number of positions of headship at different departments of that university. He served and continues to serve on a number of governing boards and councils, among which include the University of Ghana, the University of Cape Coast, the University of Education, Winneba, the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Immigration Service, and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. 

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Study of Religions from the University of Ghana, a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from Ohio University, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the College of Human Resources and Education, West Virginia University. 

Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola

Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos

Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola is an accomplished clinical microbiologist, and has been on the faculty of the University of Lagos since 2008. Her research interest has centered mainly around the diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases as well as antibiotic resistance. She served as the first female Provost of the College of Medicine and the first female Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services) at the University of Lagos. She is currently the 13th and first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos after 60 years of the University’s existence.  

She studied at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) for her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree, obtained a Masters' degree in Medical Microbiology with distinction at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and then proceeded to the University of Wales, College of Medicine, where she obtained both a diploma in Biomedical Techniques and a PhD in Medical. 

From 2004 to 2022, she directed the PEPFAR-sponsored HIV reference laboratory, responsible for the diagnosis and monitoring of over 20,000 HIV-infected patients. Professor Ogunsola is a mentor and advocate for women taking up leadership positions and has over 145 peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals. 

Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu-Sekyere

CHASS Representative

Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu Sekyere obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2002 at the University of Ghana; and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education in 2004 at the University of Cape Coast. In 2012, he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership by Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan, USA, and trained as a high school principal. 

On 13th July 2003, he was ordained a Deacon and ordained as a Priest of the Catholic Church on 17th July 2004 in the Kumasi Archdiocese. 

He has held various leadership positions, including Domestic Bursar, helping Priest, resident Priest, Rector/Headmaster, and Chairman of the Kumasi Archdiocesan Pastoral Team from 2021-present. 

Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu Sekyere is currently the Headmaster of Opoku Ware Senior High School and, since 2019, President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS). He is a member of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and Member of the Ghana Administrative and Finance Committee of WAEC. 

Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo

UTAG Representative

Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo is a Ghanaian Political Science Professor at the University of Ghana and has over two decades of teaching and research experience. He holds a PhD in Political Science and has a research focus on Youth Empowerment and Development, Democratic Governance, Electoral Reform, Natural Resource Management, European Studies, and Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea.  

Professor Gyampo has served as a visiting scholar at the University of South Florida, visiting Professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Bristol, and as a Senior Research Fellow at the Governance Unit of the Institute of Economic Affairs. He has also served as Coordinator of the Ghana Political Parties Programme and is a member of Ghana's Electoral Reforms Committee.  

Professor Gyampo has over 200 research works published in international refereed journals and is the President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, Legon Chapter. 

Mr. Frank Tsikata

SRC Representative

Mr. Frank Tsikata is currently a student at the University of Ghana, studying towards a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resource and Information Studies. 

His research interests include higher education and international studies, human resource and management consulting, consulting strategies, and digital marketing. 

He has actively handled projects such as the establishment of the Ghana Old Students’ Association, the University of Ghana chapter of the National Communication for Civic Education project dubbed ‘citizen-restoring our Ghanaian values and roles of the youth in nation building’ and the creation of a student information center to disseminate information on the University of Ghana campus. 

He has served as the Brand Ambassador for 2 Capsules, an online pharmacy in Ghana, an Administrative Assistant at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), and a mobile and communication networks intern at GEB-BEAU Ventures. 

He received an honorary award at the UGBS Royal Ball Awards for Student Activist and Most Influential Student of the Year. 

Mr. Tsikata has a keen interest in research, club and group membership, volunteerism, and exploration trips. 

Mr. Claudius Angsongna

GRASAG Representaive

Mr. Claudius Banangmwine Angsongna is the President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana, University of Ghana Legon Branch. 

He is studying towards a PhD in Environmental Science. His research interests include epidemiology and disease control, zoonosis, occupational health and safety, environmental management, disaster environment and risk reduction, and sustainable sanitation and health. 

Mr. Angsongna has served as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, the University of Ghana, and Kaleo Senior High Technical School, respectively. He is a co-author of the publication “Guinea fowl value chain: preferences and constraints of consumers”, in the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development. 

He has previously served as General Advisor to the Executive Council of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana, University of Ghana Legon Branch, and Assistant Veterinary Technologist at DBI in the Upper West Region. 

Mr. Kenneth Botchway

TEWU Representative

Mr. Kenneth Botchway is a highly accomplished administrative professional, currently holding the position of Chief Administrative Assistant at Akuafo Hall, University of Ghana. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Management and Administration a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Psychology, and a Diploma in Statistic, all from the University of Ghana. Mr. Botchway is a licensed trustee certified by the National Pension Regulatory Authority (NPRA) and specializes in pension management. 

He has over the years participated in numerous Continuing Professional Development programmes, particularly programmes related to sustainable healthcare and productivity, and holds   an Executive Certificate in Pension Management. 

Mr. Botchway has served on many boards and committees, including the University of Ghana Council, the Junior and Senior Staff Appointments and Promotions Committee, and the Junior and Senior Staff Housing Committee. He is actively involved in the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and holds the position of Legon Local Chairman.
